Notes

Free space

Beam profile:

  • Collimation with 1 glass aspheric lenses leads to elliptical shape

  • Aspheric lens leads to circular modulations of the beam profile which vanishes at focus

  • Single mode (transversal) diode laser with best possible beam parameter product M2 near 1 used

  • Beam profile dimension depends on wavelength: 3 x 1.3mm for 405nm and 5 x 2mm for 1550nm

  • Beam diameter measured behind exit aperture with CCD camera

  • Beam profile measured at large and small axis of ellipse with 86.5% power content (intensity drop to 1/e2=13.5% drop)

  • Circular beam profile possible with anamorphotic prism pair

Pointing stability:

  • Very good pointing stability since no moving parts and no thermal stress as in DPSS systems or gas lasers

  • <20 µrad

Polarisation Purity:

  • Typically between 50:1 and 100:1 or between 30 and 40dB extinction ratio

Optical pulse delay:

  • Delay between trigger out pulse and optical pulse is about 70ns

Fibre Coupled

Beam profile:

  • For single mode fibers (SMF) circular Gaussian beam profile, NA typ. 0.13, dimension depends on fiber collimator attached to SMF

  • Theoretical best possible beam quality with SMF on cost of fiber coupling efficiency (typ. 40% to 50%)

  • For multimode fibers Gaussian beam profile with worse beam propagation compared to SMF, NA=0.22 to 0.27

Pointing stability:

  • As good as with free space, <20µrad

Polarisation purity:

  • Standard SMF (random) elliptical polarized light at the end of fiber

  • Polarisation maintaining fibres with 20 to 30 dB extinction ratio

Optical pulse delay:

  • Same as free space since fibre delivers only a couple of ns delay additionally
