Advanced Fused Fibre Devices

Fused fibre devices offer advantages of small size and low cost. Only advanced fused fibre devices can achieve the performance and ultra-high reliability demanded by applications such as submarine, sensor and optical amplifiers.

Comcore have developed techniques to manufacture these extremely advanced fused fibre devices to achieve and exceed specifications for performance and reliability at the right price.

What Are Some Of The Advanced Fusion Techniques?

2x1 MM combiner

Superfusion™ - No Dumbbell Shaped Coupling Region

A high temperature process that melts not sticks fibres.

  • Circular cross section enhances sturdiness
  • Mechanical stability improves environmental insensitivity
  • Cylindrical shape minimises effect of twist
  • Micro-crack elimination minimises moisture ingress
  • Large diameter significantly improves PDL (0.03dB)

1x8 broadband splitter

Unifusion™ - No Pre-Tapering Process

  • Monolithic fusion region for 1xN splitters
  • Compact
  • Reduced PDL

Microbend™ - Epoxy Free Terminated Port

  • Permanently >60dB return loss

What Can Be Achieved Using Advanced Fibre Fusion Techniques?

1x7 SM cross section

Novel Products

  • NxMM + 1xSM combiner to 1 x double cladding output
  • 1x3 & 3x3 PM coupler for fibre optic gyroscopes
  • Ultra-low ratio tap: 0.001% and excess loss ~0.02dB

Ultra-High Reliability For Demanding Applications

  • Example: 1x2 tap 95:5, 1550nm
