Fibre Optic Strain Gauge Kit

Developed in close collaboration with Airbus, the new Fibre Optic Strain Gauge Kit is designed for the quick fixing of fibre sensors directly to surfaces.
The Strain Gauge Installation Kit allows fast, easy and reproducible installation of fibre optic Strain Gauges (SG-01) to various surfaces. With a patented method, optical gauge installation uses a specially designed mounting tool - the Sensor Pad. After installation, the pad is removed eliminating interference with the strain measurement. This also means that the pad can be reused for the installation of other sensors.

The adhesive is UV-curable, which makes installation fast and easy. Curing of the adhesive happens in two steps: (1) a fast pre-cure (typically 30s) through the sensor pad and (2) a longer final cure after removal of the sensor pad to fully cure the adhesive (typically 5 to 10mins).

Kit Features

  • Fast, easy and reproducible installation of Strain Gauges thanks to the sensor pad and a UV-curable adhesive. Typically 10~20mins..
  • Useable on various metallic and composite surfaces. Performance validated on steel, stainless steel, aluminium, inconel, titanium, glass and carbon composites.
  • Almost negligible transverse sensitivity and fatigue shifts (for up to 2 million cycles).

Strain Gauge (SG-01)

The Strain Gage SG-01 is the fibre optic equivalent of an electrical strain gauge. It consist of a fibre containing a Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) that can be mounted directly on the surface of a structure by means of an adhesive. In this way, the fibre sensor makes direct contact with the surface and therefore measures directly the strain at the surface.

Gauge Features

  • Buffered fibre sensor with a free fibre length around the FBG for direct fixing of the sensor to various surfaces.

  • High strength FBG, implying high strain levels and excellent fatigue resistance.

  • Fibre coating does not have to be removed before fixing because of its high Youngs modulus and excellent bonding properties.

  • The gauge factor is determined at batch level with high accuracy.
