Initially, the X-BERT has been created to measure the bit error rate (BER)
of a complete transceiver module or just the transmitters like lasers
or receivers operating at data rates between 9.9 and 11.1Gbps with an
option to go down to 8Gbps. There are separate slots for the optical
and electrical BER testers. Each slot provides a transmit and receive
port. An internal pseudo random binary sequence (PRBS) generator and
error detector computes the BER.
The externally referenced clock can be in the 10GHz range or 622MHz
so that the operating data rate can match the applicable standards
such as Sonet, Ethernet, Fiber Channel, FEC etc.
A fixed frequency internal clock can also be used which provides a
correlated 10GHz clock on the front panel.
